Asin

Formed in the 70s, they began performing as "Salt of the Earth" - taking their name from a Joan Baez song - later Filipinized to "Asin."

With an identifiable core group of Pendong Aban (later of Ang Grupong Pendong), Saro Bañares (who later died, in the early 90s), and Lolita Carbon, they became one of the big local folk music acts in the 70s.

As musical innovators, Asin blazed the trail in many ways. They were the first to write "message" songs about the environment ("Masdan Ang Kapaligiran"), about the Filipino diaspora ("Pagbabalik"), about the downtrodden salt of the earth ("Limot na Bayani"). They were also among the first to use indigenous musical instruments ("Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan"). Asin would prove a seminal influence on the likes of Joey Ayala, Gary Granada and virtually every Filipino "alternative" musician that came after them.

Joey Ayala

Poet and composer Jose Iñigo Homer Lacambra Ayala was born in Camp Philipps, Bukidnon on June 1, 1956. Together with his band Bagong Lumad, he has revolutionized the Filipino alternative music, with his incorporation of indigenous elements from lyrics to the use of musical instruments such as the Maranao kulintang, and the T’boli lute hegalong. His innovative styles in music and composition were seen in his involvements in other forms and media of music. He composed music for the rock operas and concerts Sa Bundok Ng Apo in 1977, and PETA productions May-I, May-I in 1979, Nukleyar I in 1983, and Nukleyar II in 1985; he composed, wrote the script, performed and directed the music of the audio-visual production Lansangan in 1978. His early recordings were mostly released underground until 1991, when three of his albums were released under Wea Records. In 1990, he was named as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men by the Philippine Jaycees.
